Burlington Residents Can Have Their Say on Mid-Rise Buildings

 

The City of Burlington is giving residents another opportunity to have their say on the future of mid-rise buildings.

According to a recent blog post from the Mayor’s website, the city is creating design guidelines for these buildings. 

These guidelines will be used by city staff to evaluate development applications where mid-rise buildings between five and 11 storeys are proposed,” notes the blog post. 

The guidelines will look at building use, e.g. retail, commercial, residential, etc. building step backs from street wall to allow for sunlight and sky views, and street level features, e.g. sidewalks in front of buildings, trees, benches, etc.

The guidelines do not highlight where mid-rise buildings can be located in Burlington. That is decided by the city’s new Official Plan and the Zoning Bylaw.

This draft was created after community feedback was gathered in the mid-rise building guidelines online survey, and at the city’s Mid-Rise Building Guidelines open houses (which occurred on Aug. 22 and Aug. 30, 2018).

Another open house will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at City Hall, Rm. 247 (second floor), 426 Brant St., from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.

Feedback from residents is needed to help shape the guidelines which will be presented to Burlington City Council in March.
