Finding a cheaper place to live that isn’t too far of a commute to work can be difficult.

A new list from real estate brokerage Zoocasa, however, calculated some of the cheapest places to buy that are near a GO Train station.

While the work-from-home trend has stuck around for some people, many have returned to a daily commute to their workplace.

As of November 2023, 20 per cent of Canadians worked from home, down from 40 per cent in April 2020, at the height of pandemic lockdowns, according to Statistics Canada. In contrast, about seven per cent of Canadians worked most of the time from home in May 2016.

So, people looking to buy a home will want to factor in the distance to work.

“Proximity to your workplace is one of the most influential factors when deciding where to live,” Zoocasa notes in their post.

Zoocasa analyzed home prices based on listings for sale by 68 GO Train stations from the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board, as well as commute times based on a weekday arrival at Union Station around 8:30 a.m.

While places like Burlington and Niagara Falls had the lowest home prices, Oakville and Port Credit top the list for most expensive.

In the west end of Oakville, Bronte Station boasts the most expensive homes for sale on average, priced at around $2,430,000, with a 40-minute commute to the city.

Port Credit is next with an average home price of $1,955,731 but a commute time of about 30 minutes, according to the report.

Cooksville or Meadowvale in Mississauga or Brampton may be a better options for lower home costs and a reasonable commute.
