This weekend (April 20-21) may be the prime viewing time for cherry blossoms in Burlington.

At the Royal Botanical Gardens conditions are just about right for their annual spectacular appearance.

“Despite the mid-week wind and rain knocking off some early blossoms, the trees are still showing a marvellous display which is perfect for the upcoming weekend,” the RBG reports.

RBG’s collection showcases a diversity of cherry tree types with varied bloom times.

The “Accolade” cherries are set to reach their peak bloom this weekend (April 20-21), whereas some of the later blooming varieties like the “Akebono” cherries are anticipated to peak early next week.

“These iconic blooms are fleeting and won’t last long, so plan your visit soon,” the RBG says.

The blooms are typically white or pink when they reach their peak.

According to the RBG, flowering cherry trees have a long history, especially in Japan where the blossoms are celebrated each year.

“Every year flowering times are recorded and noted and this has occurred for around the past 1,300 years. RBG also annually records the flowering times of its Cherries as part of a biological science known as phenology which is an important tool in helping to track climate change.”

In 2010, RBG added 34 trees to its collection. These trees are planted at both the Arboretum and Rock Garden sites.

The Royal Botanical Gardens are located at 680 Plains Road West.
