City of Burlington changes stance on ‘drive-by’ parades after consulting with Province

The City of Burlington updated its COVID-19 emergency response guidelines regarding celebratory drive-by parades, following clarification from the Province of Ontario.

The City of Burlington updated its COVID-19 emergency response guidelines regarding celebratory drive-by parades, following clarification from the Province of Ontario.

The city has been accused of using the pandemic social distancing orders as an excuse to limit drive-by celebrations, which have become a nuisance for some neighbours growing annoyed with the honking and cheering of people from their vehicles.

“Upon review of provincial emergency orders, any parade larger than five vehicles at one time would be prohibited,” warned the City of Burlington in an official statement on Apr 30.

However, provincial emergency orders do not limit drive-by parades to five cars, providing people remain in their vehicle, do not stop, or get out.

“I spoke to Premier Ford this weekend who understood our concerns with large events and praised how the city has been handling the COVID-19 crisis”, said Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward.

“We appreciate the support and collaboration the Province has shown with municipalities throughout this pandemic and into the future.”
