Two men, trapped in their vehicle for more than eight hours after a collision with a tree Monday night, were airlifted to hospital in critical condition after being discovered Tuesday morning.

Durham Police provided a little more information on the collision Wednesday after reporting yesterday that just one person was taken to a Toronto trauma centre with serious injuries.

The collision happened in the southbound (Pickering side) of Lakeridge Road, which forms the boundary between Pickering and Whitby, and just north of Myrtle Road.

Police say the vehicle was travelling south on Lake Ridge Road when it lost control and went off the roadway into a heavily wooded area, colliding with a tree.

The collision occurred on Monday at approximately 11 p.m., but the driver and passenger were trapped in the vehicle and unable to call for help. Police and emergency workers responded to the scene at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The driver was taken to a Toronto trauma centre via Air Ornge. The passenger was initially transported to a local hospital, but subsequently airlifted to Toronto. Both the driver and passenger remain in critical condition.

Members of the Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene and the road was closed for several hours while evidence was collected. This collision is still under investigation.

Anyone with video footage, dash cam footage or information about this incident is asked to call D/Cst. Emily Vander Duim of the Traffic Services Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5227.

Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.
