8-way winners of $1M lottery prize in Ontario Brampton Oakville Burlington

Patience has paid off in a big way for a group of eight lottery players from Brampton, Oakville, Burlington and across southern Ontario who just won a $1 million prize.

Michael Papineau lives in Brampton and says he’s been buying tickets for Lotto Max draws over the last seven years with a group of seven of his friends.

Papineau said he was doing a load of laundry when he decided to check the group’s ticket for the Feb. 20 Maxmillions draw and was stunned to learn they’d won the grand prize.

“I had to show John to confirm the win. I was in such disbelief and pure shock,” he said of double-checking the win with another player, John McKinnell of Burlington.

Papineau said the win stunned the group of eight players who also live in Pickering, Oro-Medonte, Scarborough and Richmond Hill.

“We only told our close family and spouses. We kept the news pretty small,” he said while picking up the team’s winnings at the OLD prize centre in Toronto.

The group is already planning how to spend their shared windfall and will save most of their winnings for now.

Papineau said he’s considering a trip to Disney and will use the win to pay some bills, while co-winner Ian D’Costa of Oro-Medonte is thinking about purchasing a small boat.

Lotto Max is $5 per play with draws every Tuesday and Friday. The OLG says it supports safe play and responsible gambling through its PlaySmart program.

The winning ticket was purchased on OLG.ca.
