Former Exchange Hotel to be Redeveloped for Affordable Housing in Halton Hills

 

Affordable housing has been a hot topic across the province for quite some time now. And the town of Halton Hills recently announced that a former exchange hotel is going to be redeveloped for affordable housing.

Located at 37 King St., Georgetown, the exchange hotel was once used to house railway workers. However, in 2013, with assistance from Mattamy Homes, the privately-owned property was purchased by Habitat for Humanity in the hopes to be redeveloped for affordable housing.

And a recent press release from town has revealed the redevelopment will consist of six homes.

The hotel, according to the release, will be re-constructed as a semi-detached home that will accommodate two families, and re-oriented to face Queen Street. The other four townhomes, however, will be adjacent to the former hotel and facing King Street.

According to Alex Fuller, Manager of Corporate Communications, Halton Hills, the former hotel will be dismantled, pieces will be inventoried, and some pieces will be used in the new structure.

With that being said, Habitat has hired a heritage specialist to oversee the dismantling and cataloging of the exchange hotel's heritage pieces.

Work is expected to begin this summer.

The town of Halton Hills has partnered with Habitat to support the construction of affordable housing.

"Our council has had numerous discussions about advancing the inventory of affordable housing in this community," Mayor Rick Bonnette said in a statement. "Partnering with Habitat — an organization dedicated to creating homes for those in need makes good sense."

In addition, according to the town's website, Halton Hills has agreed to waive the permit and development fees for the project to an upset limit of $250,000.
