Halton Hills Mayor Weighs in on Passing of Doug Ford’s Plans for More Housing

On June 6, 2019, the Ontario government passed Bill 108 – entitled the ‘More Homes, More Choice Act, 2019’ – which, as noted in previous inhalton articles, is a comprehensive legislation that will work to tackle the housing crisis.
However, many municipalities, including those within the Halton Region, are concerned about what impact this newly passed bill will have on their city or town.
And before the bill, which consists of changes to 13 pieces of legislation, was passed all Halton municipalities spoke out against it.
“Of significance are changes that will impact municipal land planning processes including how development charges are collected and applied,” reads a recent Halton Hills press release.
But now that the bill has been passed, Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette is speaking up again.

“It is not just disappointing that the province did not listen to us (municipalities) but it is disconcerting,” Bonnette said in a statement regarding the passing of the bill. “This is not how we build partnerships.”
Bonnette continued, “This Bill will mean new growth will pay even less of its true costs and you, the existing taxpayer, will have to make up the difference.”
However, according to the release, Bill 108 regulations are still pending from the province.
