Breed: Azores Cattle Dog

Name: Catina

Age: 3 years

Breed: Azores Cattle Dog

Message from the Oakville & Milton Humane Society:

Catina was brought to the shelter as a stray so we do not have a history on her. She is a really sweet girl. She is cuddly, social with her people and low to medium energy level. She loves to be active and go for long hikes, but she is just as happy to sleep for hours in a comfy bed. She is a mature woman with somewhat of a playful side that comes out from time to time. She will play and interact with toys but only by herself. She doesn’t seem to understand and/or have any experience with interactive play with people. With time and patience she will learn to play with her human family.

Catina does suffer from separation anxiety and can become vocal and destructive when her “person” leaves. This is being managed and worked on with medication and training. Her new owner will have to have a flexible schedule to manage this behaviour and help her to become confident when left alone. Catina also has skin allergies that are under control using a vet prescribed diet that she should stay on unless directed by a veterinarian.

This Cattle Dog mix is looking for a home where everyone is over the age of 16 years due to her lack of experience with children and occasional discomfort/lack of body language when being handled and pet by new people she meets. She responds well to patience, a soft voice and a kind hand. She would do best with a family who have experience working with a reserved dog and one that feels comfortable working with a dog afraid of abandonment. She has enjoyed meeting new people and has been well socialized in her foster home.

Catina is working on her dog social skills. She does bark at other dogs sometimes when she is on leash but is responsive to her handler when they call her away with encouragement. She currently does not have any doggy friends and is not a candidate for the dog park. She enjoys going for walks but is uncomfortable when cars pass by her too closely which is something her new owner needs to be mindful of. Catina has learned to walk with a loose leash and enjoys exploring new areas. She takes a couple of weeks to adjust to a new home and new owner but once she is settled, she is very adaptable to new situations with her “person” present. With time and trust she will continue to let her personality shine through and will blossom into a wonderful addition to her forever home.
