A Georgetown man has been charged with the death of his common-law wife following a house fire last week.

Halton police say Christopher Dayfoot, 38, was arrested and charged with arson — disregard for human life.

The Canadian Criminal Code suggests this type of charge is filed in cases where a fire is intentionally or recklessly created on a property that causes bodily harm to a person.

In this case, the charges have not been proven in court.

The name of the woman has not been released by police.

Reports of the fire came in on Feb. 7 when the Halton Hills Fire Department was called to Victoria St. in Georgetown. Firefighters removed one person from the home who was pronounced dead at the scene. The fire destroyed two semi-detached dwellings.

Dayfoot appeared in the Ontario Court of Justice on Feb. 9 and has been remanded into custody pending a future court date.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office.

This incident remains under investigation by the Halton Regional Police Service’s Major Crime Unit. Anyone with information  can call 905-825-4747
