It’s easy to miss unless you know what you are looking for.

But nestled between Burlington and Waterdown in the area known as Clappison Woods is what appears to be a crudely built cabin that in reality offers a rustic sanctuary that short-term visitors are raving about.

Listed on both Airbnb and Vrbo rental sites, “the cozy winter cabin” is billed as an easy-to-get-to-escape for those seeking a temporary dose of nature from the hustle and bustle of urban living.

Those who have stayed there have given the cabin glowing reviews earning a “guest favourite” label on Airbnb as one of the most loved homes on its website.

On Vrbo the property is described as being on eight acres of private forest and promises that “you won’t believe you are in Burlington!”

Recently the urban explorer known as Dave C from Freaktography stayed at the cabin and gave his audience a close-up view of what visitors have in store.

“My wife and I enjoyed a quiet day and night at the cabin, while we felt like we were far up north at a remote cabin, we were actually just 10 minutes from our home in Southern Ontario,” he said. “I thought those who are interested in local history and love a good news success story, might like to see what became of this old run-down cabin in the woods.”

However, Dave’s experience with the cabin goes well beyond his recent visit.

Back in 2022, he filmed a documentary about the cabin and its builder/owner Bob Lanois, an accomplished musician and photographer from Hamilton.

Looking for a simple lifestyle, Lanois kept the cabin primitive but following his death, it was abandoned and fell into disrepair.

That changed when the property was purchased and the new owners renovated the inside.

The makeover was impressive.

“What a difference from when I was here last time,” Dave C said of the cabin now. “They have done such a nice job here. They fixed the floors, walls, added stained glass…they really cleaned it up nice.”

Others agree with reviewers calling the cabin and surrounding forest “magical” and “a piece of paradise” as well as “a place rich with history and charm.”
