Milton Looking into Problems with Litter and Waste
The conversation surrounding protecting the environment, especially when it comes to plastics, has been a popular one for the last several months. And it doesn’t look like that conservation is stopping anytime soon, at least in the town of Milton.
On Sept. 16, 2019, a motion will be considered by council in regards to reducing litter and waste.
This motion will be introduced on Aug. 26, 2019.
According to the notice of motion document, the province of Ontario, through the Ministry of the Environment, Conversation and Parks, has posted a discussion paper entitled ‘Reducing Litter and Waste in our Communities’.
However, the motion notes that responsibility has not been sufficiently addressed by the province.
Although, programs regarding plastics have been implemented in other areas across the country.
“A successful deposit/return program for single-use plastic, aluminum and metal drink containers has been in existence in other provinces in Canada including Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and British Colombia,” reads the notice of motion document. “These successful programs have eliminated many of these containers from the natural environment.”
As a result, it is being recommended that Milton call upon the province to review and implement a deposit/return program for single-use plastic, aluminum, and mental drink containers, and review the current producer requirements and look for extended producer responsibility for all packing.
A copy of the motion will be sent to Doug Ford, the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, the Minister of Municipal Affairs, and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.
