Restaurants in Mississauga, Hamilton and Halton make list of best brunch spots in Ontario

With Mother’s Day fast approaching, more people are thinking about brunch spots that are ideal for celebrating–but really, brunch is never a bad idea at any point during the year. 

Thankfully, for those who haven’t yet decided where to celebrate, Open Table, an online restaurant reservation service, just posted its annual list of the 100 Most Popular Brunch Restaurants in Canada for 2024.

This year, restaurants in Mississauga, Hamilton, Oakville, Burlington and Uxbridge made the cut, along with hotpots in Toronto, Niagara, Waterloo, Ottawa and other Ontario towns and cities. 

According to Open Table, brunch is becoming an increasingly popular Mother’s Day activity, with the website reporting a 41 per cent increase in diners mentioning the beloved not quite breakfast, not quite lunch dining experience in reviews mentioning the holiday in 2023. 

Open Table says its research suggests that over half of Canadians plan on going out for Mother’s Day and that tables book up quickly in the lead-up to the special day. According to the website, 52 per cent of reservations were made about four days in advance last year, which suggests people should book a table no later than May 8 to ensure they can get a spot on May 12.

Taps Public House – Mississauga

Located in Meadowvale Town Centre, Taps Public House is described as a “vibrant, modern concept that creates a high energy relaxed casual atmosphere.” The resto offers beer flights and a comprehensive drink menu and is also known for its weekend brunch menu, which includes steak and eggs, a poached egg on avocado toast, banana bread French toast, eggs Benedict and more. 

The Mule – Hamilton

The Mule, located in the King William Street and John Street North area, also made the list. Known as the place “where tacos, tequila and bourbon come to party,” the resto offers a unique brunch menu that includes brunch tacos, fried chicken and churros, huevos rancheros, pancakes and more. 

Undefined – Hamilton

Undefined, a King William Street resto that takes a “whimsical’ approach to cooking from scratch offers diners an extensive array of memorable brunch options. The menu features an eye-popping selection of creative mimosas, including lemon and lavender, candy apple and pink hibiscus varieties. As far as food goes, the menu boasts biscuit boards, chorizo huevos rancheros, banana and sourdough French toast, a farmer’s sausage and potato skillet and more. 

The Ancaster Mill – Hamilton

The Ancaster Mill, located in the Hamilton suburb of Ancaster, sits beside a creek and boasts a large dining room with a view of a waterfall. The restaurant, which offers a range of locally sourced ingredients, hosts a buffet brunch every Sunday.

Harpers Landing – Oakville

Harpers Landing, located in a busy plaza on Cornwall Road, has been providing casual fare to the community since 2013. The restaurant, part of the larger Landing Group chain, offers brunch on weekends and holidays. Some menu items include scones, huevos rancheros, cheesecake-stuffed French toast, and more. 

Jacksons Landing – Burlington

Also part of the Landing Group company, the New Street location in Burlington also offers brunch and diners can expect the same fare served at other locations–including a smoked salmon Benedict and the Landing Breakfast with two eggs, bacon, chorizo sausage, toast and a choice of salad or potatoes. 

Rust Bistrobar – Burlington

This Walkers Line resto bills itself as “an intimate, casual cool dining destination.” As far as brunch goes, diners can partake in a ranch of cocktails with names like Black Hole Sun (made with Rum Chata, Jager cold brew, honey syrup and cold brew coffee) and I Dream of Greenie (made with St. Germaine, Tanqueray, matcha, lemon juice, honey syrup and soda). Food items include various Bennies, frittatas, steak and eggs and more. 

Urban Pantry – Uxbridge

Urban Pantry, which describes itself as a contemporary farm-to-table restaurant, serves brunch on Sundays. As far as food goes, those celebrating Mom (or just celebrating Sunday) can indulge in omelettes, eggs Benedict with crab, a mushroom puff pastry scramble, pancakes and more. 

Other restaurants that made the list include the Elora Mill, Maison Selby in Toronto, The Drawing Room in the Prince of Wales Hotel in Niagara-on-the-Lake and the Royal Hotel in Prince Edward. 

“Canadians love to go all out for Mother’s Day — last year, it was the biggest dining day of 2023, and new research shows Canadians plan to spend more dining out for the holiday compared to last year,” said Canada Country Director Matt Davis in a statement. 

“With 59 per cent of Canadian mothers saying they would rather receive an experience than a tangible gift for the occasion — indulge mom with a special meal out.”
