It’s been a long time coming, but more Halton Region roads have finally been designated as Community Safety Zones in Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills.

At a meeting earlier this month, Halton Council have approved 17 new Community Safety Zones to bring the total to 19.

Community Safety Zones are sections of roadways where vulnerable road users, such as children, seniors, pedestrians, cyclists and other non-motorized users, are of special concern.

The zones create a safer environment in high risk areas such as schools, playgrounds and community centres and reduce the risk of accidents and injuries.

“We haven’t added a community safety zone in the region for, I believe, up to15 years,” said Halton Region Commissioner of Public Works Andrew Farr. “One thing we don’t want to do, we’re not going to wait another 15 years.

“We want to start with the 17 we have identified here and then over time we will work very closely with the local municipalities.”

Farr said going forward they would, on annual basis, look at adjusting the community safety zones. Updating and using more of them over time as those roads develop, so that they’re always complete.

“I wouldn’t necessarily change the ones we do now cause than we start changing a lot of them,” said Farr. “But I certainly want to take each one of them, look at them with our staff and say, ‘Are there any consequences we didn’t think about? Have we captured anything? Does it lead us to think of any others?’”

The Community Safety Zones also bring increased fines, deterring careless driving and speeding.

“Community Safety Zones is about giving Halton police additional tools, doubling fines, so that we try and reduce speeding,” said Farr.

Burlington Ward 2 City and Regional Councillor Lisa Kearns is happy to hear more Community Safety Zones could be on their way.

“We are dealing with a very large complex swatch of development area,” she said. “It’s good to hear that’s being thought of and evolving. I think it would be appreciated by all of our friends who live south of the QEW and are looking for traffic enhancements.”
