Taste of Nigeria arrives in downtown Oshawa with B & B Alafia Bakery

A new bakery and restaurant is bringing a taste of Nigeria to downtown Oshawa.
B & B Alafia Bakery at 44 Simcoe St. N – just a few buildings north of the four corners – held its grand opening last week, with Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter on hand for the ribbon-cutting.
The bakery offers a variety of fresh-baked bread, from butter bread and whit bread to special offerings like Coconut Bread, Sardine Bread, Chocolate Bread, Agege Bread and Puff-Puff, an African fried dough snack originating from Nigeria.

There are other food options as well, such as Akara (made from black-eyed peas ground with pepper and other seasonings), Moi Moi (a traditional bean pudding), Smokey Jollof Rice with Chicken, Ofada Rice with Ayamase Sauce, Poundo Yam with Efo Riro and Fried Plantain, to name a few.
“It’s a one-stop, all-in-one bakery, with everything made fresh, said Bola Aje, who opened the shop with his wife Bimbo in January.

The name of the bakery comes from their Nigerian heritage, Aje said, with ‘Alafia’ the nickname/street name of his father-in-law.

Most of the service is take-out but there is a small area for those who want to indulge in the goodness of freshly baked bread and the richness of African cuisine immediately.
