Summer holidays are fast approaching and a new list reveals the top five destinations for Canadians this year.

Traditionally, summer is the busiest travel season. Before the pandemic, in 2019, Pearson Airport in Mississauga estimated more than 10 million travellers would pass through the airport between Canada Day and Labour Day long weekend.

Those who don’t have a travel destination in mind this summer may want to have a look at the top destinations Canadians are looking to travel to just released from Google Flights.

The most popular spots were determined by the highest number of searches on Google Flights.

Here are the top five:

Paris

Known as a global centre for art, fashion and food, Paris will host the Summer Olympic Games this year. It will likely be a busy travel season for the capital city. But travellers should be aware, France recently raised the security threat level after the attack in Moscow.

London, England

The capital of England has a long history dating back to Roman times. These days visitors check out Buckingham Palace, the iconic Big Ben clock tower and free museums and art galleries.

Lisbon, Portugal

Portugal’s capital city is full of colourful, historic neighbourhoods. History buffs can check out World Heritage monuments and medieval areas. This June, a Mississauga teen band heads to Lisbon for Rock in Rio Lisboa.

Tokyo, Japan

Along with ancient temples, Tokyo Japan is a modern city known for embracing technology, anime and quirky culture. The food choices go well beyond the standard sushi.

Rome, Italy

The last city on the list is known for its iconic monuments including the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. Of course, there is also great pasta, pizza, gelato and more.

In addition to the top international spots, Google also found search trends for closer-to-home travel spots.
