Walmart says ‘shocking’ arson fire shut down store in Burlington

A fire that led to the evacuation of a Walmart in Burlington was an act of arson, says a company spokesperson.

In an email to inhalton.com, the spokesperson said police are currently investigating the incident that occurred at 2065 Fairview St. last night (March 30).

“This appears to be a criminal act of arson that will unfortunately and unfairly impact our customers, associates and the local community who rely on the store. Setting a fire in a public setting is shocking, dangerous and shameful,” a statement from Walmart reads.

“Rest assured, we are cooperating fully with the police investigation. We will do everything we can to ensure the arsonist is identified and held accountable, including by assessing our legal options to seek compensation from the arsonist for the damages caused by this act.”

Halton Regional Police confirmed that they were called to the scene last night.

The store remains closed while clean-up and repairs take place.

“The store will re-open as soon as possible while we work with officials to ensure the store is safe and up to the standards our customers expect and deserve,” said the statement.

The fire was discovered after 7 p.m. last night, forcing the evacuation.

There were no injuries reported and the company said customers and all staff who were in the store at the time were evacuated quickly and are safe.

Many who were at the scene at the time say several Burlington fire trucks arrived as the store was being evacuated.

“We want to thank all first responders who attended the fire,” reads the statement. “We encourage anyone with information about the identity of the arsonist to contact police.”
