Why are There So Many Illegal Basement Apartments In Milton?
If you’re looking for a place to rent in Milton - likely a basement apartment - make sure you do your homework first or you could be in for a nasty surprise.
The Town of Milton’s building division says there has been a major rise in the number of illegal and dangerous basement apartments in the first quarter of 2018.
Town staff have registered nearly triple the number of complaints that were received during the same period in 2017.
“We take these complaints very seriously and follow-up on every one that we receive,” said Colin Brook, director of building services and chief building official. “The safety of all occupants is paramount. The Ontario Building Code and a required building permit ensures that the necessary minimum standards are met to safeguard the occupants allowing them to enjoy their space safely.”
Once an illegal basement apartment is found the building division issues an order for a violation of the Ontario Building Code.
Some people have even been convicted for not complying with orders.
In 2017, the punishment for violations saw a huge increase of $4,500 — from $500 to $5,000
Over the last year, the building division has been working with the Town of Milton Fire Department and bylaw enforcement.
Milton’s Fire Department has started to issue tickets on the spot for violations related to smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors.
To avoid fines, the town is telling residents to contact the planning and development department if they are thinking of building an apartment so they can get the right permits.
All accessory apartments need to be up to code and have a building permit.
