More than 200 youth from across Durham participated in the ninth Community Advocacy and Networking (CAN) Conference in Whitby Saturday, a bi-annual initiative of Durham Police’s Youth in Policing.

The Youth in Policing team wrapped up the Winter term with their conference, held at the Durham District School Board offices, with youth from around the region invited to the afternoon session.

The theme was ‘Networking’ and the conference was led by YIP’s Durham Youth Ambassadors, who prepared workshops and activities to encourage their peers to identify their strengths and use them effectively. Participants were tasked with finding innovative ways to contribute to the community while also developing their public speaking skills through mock interviews.

In the morning, speakers from the Humane Society of Durham Region, Hillsdale Terraces LTC, Canada Border Services Agency and Durham Police’s own Tactical Support Unit led hands-on workshops. Morning activities included the construction of 20 cat shelters, which were distributed to the community in collaboration with the Humane Society of Durham Region, the creation of 20 ‘You Are Not Alone’ videos for Hillsdale residents and practical simulations conducted by both Border Services and DRPS.

The afternoon segment of the conference was open to the public and the YIP team was joined by about 210 youth, with 47 community booths that offered networking, volunteer, employment, and professional development opportunities.

YIP is now hiring for the summer session and will be accepting applications until April 2.
